Local diversification enhances pollinator visitation to strawberry and may improve pollination and marketability

چکیده

Numerous studies show that semi-natural habitats within agricultural landscapes benefit native pollinating insects and increase resultant crop pollination services. More recently, evidence is emerging diversification techniques on farms, as well increased compositional configurational heterogeneity the cropped portion of landscapes, enhance pollinator communities. However, to date, only a few have investigated how diversifying crops farm field itself (i.e., polyculture) influences wild communities In Central Coast California, we investigate local fields, crossed with proportion natural habitat in surrounding landscape, jointly affect services strawberry. On 16 organic farms varying type (monoculture vs. land cover, find both factors abundance richness, although neither honey bee abundance. Further, cover has stronger effect richness monoculture (vs. farms. Although strawberry can self-pollinate, document experimentally exclusion doubles probability berry malformation, while excluding pollinators wind triples corresponding effects marketability. Finally, post-hoc tests, malformation significantly higher greater visitation by bees, observed trend this reduction was mitigated richness. These results suggest polyculture support more abundant diverse communities, ambient levels provide an important service improving marketability reducing malformation). further confirmation would be needed, our work suggests bees alone do not sufficient Prior shown tend visit top flower receptacle, other often crawl around base, leading complete achenes and, consequently, better formed berries. If visits reduced system, could explain unexpected correlation between malformation.

Local habitat characteristics but not landscape urbanization drive pollinator visitation and native plant pollination in forest remnants

Habitat loss from urban development threatens native plant populations in many regions of the world. In addition to direct plant mortality, urban intensification potentially impacts pollinator communities and in turn disrupts the pollination mutualisms that are critical to the viability of native plant populations. We placed standardized flowering plant arrays into woodlands along a gradient of...

Linking pollinator visitation rate and pollen receipt.

The majority of flowering plants require animals for pollination, a critical ecosystem service in natural and agricultural systems. However, quantifying useful estimates of pollinator visitation rates can be nearly impossible when pollinator visitation is infrequent. We examined the utility of an indirect measure of pollinator visitation, namely pollen receipt by flowers, using the hummingbird-...

Florivory and pollinator visitation: a cautionary tale

Florivory, or damage to flowers by herbivores, can make flowers less attractive to pollinators, potentially resulting in reduced plant fitness. However, not many studies have combined observations with experiments to assess the causal link between florivory and pollination. We conducted field observations at eight sites in northern California, combined with field experiments that involved artif...

Fire Promotes Pollinator Visitation: Implications for Ameliorating Declines of Pollination Services

Pollinators serve critical roles for the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems, and have an estimated annual value of over $150 billion for global agriculture. Mounting evidence from agricultural systems reveals that pollinators are declining in many regions of the world, and with a lack of information on whether pollinator communities in natural systems are following similar trends, identifyin...

Effect of Postharvest treatments of GABA and salicylic acid in antioxidant quality and marketability of Strawberry

Strawberry is highly perishable with huge post-harvest losses. So preserving quality and increasing in storability by using of safe compounds is important. In this case, the effect of salicylic acid and GABA (0, 0.5 and 1 mM) as a factorial experiment in completely randomized design were analyzed on longevity and qualitative and biochemical traits of strawberry during 7 and 14 after cold storag...
